So..Ubuntu 9.10 is released! I Installed it in my box yesterday!!

This is the complete list of packages that should be downloaded for enabling restricted packages -Ubuntu Restricted Extras- in a freshly installed Ubuntu 9.10,the Karmic Koala.

This list is meant for offline Ubuntu users who opt for downloading packages through another PC.No dependency issue will arise here.All dependent packages for a freshly installed system are listed here.There are 58 packages.I think total size of all packages may come around 75MB.You can download packages from http://packages.ubuntu.com/Here I'v linked to http://archive.ubuntu.com repository.Click to download packages. Installing anything offline in Ubuntu

Before reading this post it is a good idea to refer the following post:

Brief description of Ubuntu packages:
"I can't find an installer or .exe file for Ubuntu" - is a common complaint of Ubuntu newbies.Ubuntu based on Debian project so it uses .deb packages for installing anything (Red Hat based flavors like Fedora uses .rpm packages).

GNU/Linux operating systems uses an innovative library sharing method in which system files will be shared between programs thus optimizes disk space usage effectively.
eg., assume that you are using two media players in Ubuntu like VLC media player and Amarok music player.
For playing an ogg media file both players use ogg decoding library present in your system (library files will be in /usr/lib/ directory).So one program cannot be run without its dependencies.

So if we are installing anything in Ubuntu, every package will list and download its dependencies automatically.Ubuntu  uses apt-get for this purpose.apt-get having different GUI front ends like Synaptic (System >> Administration >> Synaptic Package manager), aptitude, gnome-apt etc.

But this 'dependency tradition' makes installing anything offline in Ubuntu is cumbersome.Users who have a slow or no internet connection are the 'victims' of these.http://packages.ubuntu.com/ is a core repository from where we can download packages manually.But there is no method there to download dependencies automatically.So it is sure that you will mess up with downloading dependencies and its dependencies if you are not aware of what packages are there in your system and what not.But this is not as much as painstaking as you may think.Read below

Solutions:

1. Manual Download
   You can consider manual downloading from repositories (eg: http://packages.ubuntu.com/).Download the package you want to install through a computer that having an internet connection and transfer it to your Ubuntu box.Open it with GDebi package installer (just double click on .deb file).It will list dependency files if required.You can download those dependencies again and complete installing of package.

More: You can generate download scripts that contains package names and its dependencies using Synaptic package manager.
Open Synaptic 
mark the packages you want to install 
dependencies will also be marked automatically
open File on menu
click Generate package download script and save the script

Now you can copy package names from the saved script.

2. APTonCD
    APTonCD is a program for Debian systems which can be used to backup the packages (found in /var/cache/apt/archives/ folder) of your system.If you are reinstalling your Ubuntu or want to ship your programs with all dependencies to a Ubuntu system which has no internet connection then you can use this nice application.APTonCD makes CD images (.iso files) of entire packages.You can make CDs or DVD from these images.You can retrieve these packages from CD either using Synaptic Package Manager or using APTonCD itself.You can also restore CD images through APTonCD.

Luckily you can install APTonCD .deb file without any dependency issue in a freshly installed Ubuntu PC.
Download it from http://aptoncd.sourceforge.net/ and double click.

3. Addon CDs
    Several vendors or volunteers provide Addon CDs for Ubuntu.Vendors may charge you for shipping and all.Volunteer efforts are not matured enough either.You can search for those.

Recovering GRUB after reinstalling Windows

I was using a dual-boot system of Ubuntu and windows XP pro.To be sincere i keep windows only for playing EA Sports FIFA Manager 07 :-) as it cannot be played using WINE under Ubuntu.

As usual my windows OS got infected with viruses and trogens.So i want to reinstall it to format C drive.I was knowing that if i reinstall windows then system's MBR will be overwritten without considering about any other operating systems working in the system.This is not good at all.So I've to do something to recover the boot loader - GRUB.

One post from official Ubuntu support pages insists that we have to use 'alternative installation CD' (ie., not the live CD but another one which can be downloaded) to recover GRUB which is not true!We can use live CD (for machines which have at least 512RAM, others may have to use alternative installation CD) for recovering GRUB.

I reinstalled Windows XP Pro so my GRUB disappeared, then i put my Ubuntu Live CD in tray and did boot from it.
Then I entered "Live Session" and opened terminal (Applications >> Accessories >> Terminal).

It will show Ubuntu@Ubuntu:~$ as current user.Then I executed following commands

sudo grub

find /boot/grub/stage1

you will get something like (hd0,6)

root (hd?,?)

replace (hd?,?) with what you got

setup (hd0)

quit

Thats all.....Then I restarted my computer..It should have worked normally.

BUT

I got an error message while I'm selecting Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic from GRUB list.The problem may be a mismatch between existing boot configuration and things I have entered previously.

If you also find the same then the solution is...

Boot from live CD, as a live session user open Terminal just like above.
execute first two codes

sudo grub

find /boot/grub/stage1

you will get something like (hd?,?)

then
>> Find the partition on which you have previously installed Ubuntu
>> Mount it by clicking on it
>> Find the location of /boot/grub/menu.lst
It should be somwhere like /media/disk/boot/grub/menu.lst

open that file for editing

sudo gedit /media/disk/boot/grub/menu.lst

Scroll to last part of menu.lst then you will find boot configuration like this

Compare the address (hd?,?) you got with the (hd?,?) of 2nd line.for me (hd0,8)
If it is different from what you got then change (hd?,?) to the value (hd?,?).Once you completed editing menu.lst, then close it and execute the remaining commands.

root (hd?,?)

setup (hd0)

quit

Your GRUB will be OK now!

Note: Reverse will not work.That is you cannot change (hd?,?) to (hd?,?).
